Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae:

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serkan Özel is a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and Science Education at Boğaziçi University and the director of the University’s Center for Educational Technology and Research. Dr. Özel also conducts research at the Children’s Learning Laboratory (ÇÖL), focusing on how children learn and how this learning can be enhanced. His work explores the acquisition of key mathematical concepts and problem-solving procedures through experiences that foster learning. His research interests include the role of early patterning skills in later mathematics learning, high school students’ perceptions of algebraic expressions, the development of number line understanding across different age groups, and the cognitive factors that influence these processes.

In Turkey, Dr. Özel has been actively involved in projects with TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries), Tüpraş (Turkish Petroleum Refineries), and TEGV (Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey). Between 2019 and 2021, he continued his research as a visiting scholar in the Department of Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. Additionally, he has served as a pedagogical consultant for the educational content developed for children within Arter Contemporary Art Museum’s learning program, and he has advised numerous schools from elementary to high school on STEM education and the use of technology in teaching.

Dr. Özel earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in 2004 in Mathematics Education from the Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education at Boğaziçi University. He received his Ph.D. in 2009 from Texas A&M University in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Educational Technology. An expert in mathematics instruction, technology integration, and STEM education, Dr. Özel focuses particularly on equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to integrate mathematics and technology into their instructional practices.

In addition to his research, Dr. Özel serves as the editor-in-chief of the Boğaziçi University Journal of Education, associate editor of Experimental Psychology: Applied (published by the American Psychological Association), and managing editor of the Journal of Research in Technology, Innovation and Special Education. He is a founding member of the Mathematics Education Association and the STEM Education Stakeholders Association, and one of the initiators of the working group that adapted the FeTeMM (STEM) education model to the Turkish context. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Kriton Curi Environmental Foundation. Due to his expertise in educational technologies and his commitment to advancing STEM education, Dr. Özel was selected for the Vanderbilt University Global Scholars-in-Residence Program.
